Exploring James Turrell work and Drake "Hotline Bling" using Participatory Culture James Turrell is an American artist primarily concerned with Light and Space, he was Born on May 6, 1943, in Los Angeles, California. He’s an artist who’s able to use light in a very unique way, he was able to present light that make the audience wonder where the light is coming from and where the light source is. He’s not only good at using light he’s also good at using the space around him he’s a bit of an architect himself, one of the most famous work by James Turrell is the Roden Crater, a natural cinder cone crater located outside Flagstaff, Arizona that he is turning into a massive naked-eye observatory. On the other hand, Drake is a famous singer/rapper and has produce a lot of hits in his career. So, what happen was Drake when to James Turrell exhibition in 2014 at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was inspired by James Turrell art installation, which James Turrell said in an interview Drake went through my exhibition. I did meet him in Los Angeles, and he was in the spaces that I did do there and has some images from that and in 2016 Drake has release his hit song “Hotline Bling”. Participatory Culture is the development of the way that we consume material and how recently, as a result of the development of sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, we are ‘both audience and producer, both consumer and creator. Participatory Culture such as YouTube and other social media application help artist like Drake get more well known if there was no social media, Drake wouldn’t be this well known, and he would be able to know about James Turrell work. It was because social media that Drake was able to know about James Turrell. Audience also played a big role in this culture, if there’s no audience there wouldn’t have a Participatory Culture. We can say that before Drake release hotline Bling, James Turrell wasn't that well known, he might be well known in the art and design or architecture area, but to normal average people he wasn’t that well know. In an interview James Turrell said “Actually, I’ve enjoyed a lot more attention since he got involved.” James Turrrell wasn’t expecting this at all that he would turn out to be more famous and he was able to gain more audience, not only in the art and design audience but also in the pop music culture. He said that “This is very interesting because you can think that you have some importance by involvement in the art world, but you know popular culture is so much more.” Who would think that an artist would be more famous and gain a lot more audience just because of one singer. James Turrell is still growing in popularity as in this year (2019) Kanye West, which is another famous singer/rapper who supported James Turrell with $10 million to create an art that we will have to wait and see. As you can see artist need social media too for them to be successful, we have come to a culture where you can’t only be good as an artist, but you need the help of social media so that the rest of the world will be able to be your work. Social media have play a huge role is this 21st century. And the Participatory Culture is still growing. Exploring James Turrell work and Drake "Hotline Bling" using Questioning Cultures
In this second essay I’m going to talk about how questioning Culture have an impact in James Turrell art work and also from the song “Hotline Bling” by Drake the famous singer/rapper. James Turrell is an American artist primarily concerned with Light and Space, he was Born on May 6, 1943, in Los Angeles, California. Questioning Culture is the relationship between a culture and the society, so for this we would be using the celebrity culture and the society and how much of the celebrity culture can influence the society. Theres a lot of influence in the celebrity culture where normal people like us are really easy to get influence by them and we follow what they do. part of this is from social media as well, such as facebook, instagram, twitter and youtube. that's the main base where celebrity influence us in our daily live. Social media can be easily found around you, mostly on your mobile phone with all the social media application out there. You can see how participatory culture have evolve throughout the century, as People can’t leave their house without their phone, everything you need is in your phone, you use your phone to pay for groceries, take pictures, and even using it to pay for the bus tickets. You would always see teenagers holding their phone in public for no reason, I’m 20 years old and I always hold my phone in my hand all the time for no reason, because it such an importance device that I need it all the time on my daily life.
